Become a Volunteer

Below is a list of volunteer positions which, have a specific task that needs to be accomplished in order for SASRA to be functional. These positions need to be filled ASAP by caring, responsible people who can work with a team who share the same goals of Save A Shepherd Rescue Alliance

Foster Homes

Foster Homes

Foster homes are an essential part of SASRA. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to function. Once we have evaluated and decided to take a German Shepherd into the SASRA family, the dog is placed in the volunteer foster home for care until a permanent home can be found. The foster home is responsible for any medical care needed, such as microchipping, updated shots, fecal and bloodwork tests, spay/neuter, or any other illness or injury the dog may suffer. Once the dog has settled in and the foster volunteer has a good grasp on how the dog reacts to other people and dogs in public, the foster dog may be taken to events for exposure. Most important is that communication with the Placement Committee is maintained regarding the foster dog – it’s temperament, it’s medical condition (if applicable), it’s reactions to children, other dogs, and if possible cats. This information is vital to a successful placement of the foster dog. Because most of our dogs are stressed when we take them into our family, we do not put them out for adoption for at least 2 weeks after they come into the home. This gives them a chance to settle down and lets their true personality begin to shine. Once a potential adopter has been found, they will be put in touch with the foster home. At the meeting, it is the foster home’s responsibility to observe the dynamics of the interaction and whether or not it is felt that this will be a good match for everyone. Foster dogs can be in the home for as little as a month or as long as 6 or more months, depending on the dog and finding a home for it.

If you are not currently a SASRA Volunteer, please fill out a volunteer agreement and write foster home position on the first page.

Event Volunteers

Event Volunteers

There are 3 main jobs of event volunteers, in some cases (simple small information table only, gift wrapping, etc…) a seasoned or very comfortable event volunteer can do all three jobs.

  1. Set up person – Obtain the kit/table from its current location and transport it to the event. Set up the table, hang our banner, and set out our sellable merchandise along with a donation canister.
  2. Event volunteers – Our purpose is twofold…to make money for our organization through selling items and taking donations…and public awareness. We explain to people how they can become a volunteer, adopt from us and surrender to us. (applications pertaining to all these things are in the kit to hand out if applicable) It is our duty to remain courteous as we are representing SASRA. Our dogs are welcome at Events (unless otherwise specified) and we encourage you to bring yours. (please use your discretion and only bring people/ dog-friendly pets) Lastly, the table is never to be left unattended to prevent theft as we do have a money box, donation canister, and merchandise present.
  3. Tear down person – Neatly pack items away in their crates. Count money made from sales and donations (keep each tally separate) and fill out a Receipts Report To Treasurer form. Mail a check for the total money brought in along with the Receipts Report to the treasurer. Return the kit/table to where it belongs.
If you are not currently a SASRA Volunteer, please fill out a volunteer agreement and write event volunteer position on the first page.
